The Maldives have been suggested a number of times as a trip to consider and one that SD should do!

I've been speaking with Sheena aka Weescot about a trip to the Maldives and she has sent me some information that indicates that the best time to dive there is Jan to Mar but being seasonal there are other things to see at different times of the year.

So.....

Anyone else interested in the Maldives?
Liveaboard or landbased?
What is the 'must see' aspects of this destination?
Water temps, vis, critters we'll see?

I looked at the site Sheena posted as well. It looks great! :fish: I would be interested in a 2009 trip there. Probably a mix of landbased and liveaboard would be my preference. I also prefer a time of year with warmer water temps! I'm a wuss!

Anyone else interested in the Maldives?

I was but gave up once I saw the effort involved to get there. It was in my top 10 wishlist places. Now its on my lotto list, that one includes the Seychelles....

A quick check looks like it would be $1900 for a coach ticket in January '09, DFW-MLE. But even worse than that, shortest travel time was 27 hours. :fish:

Agree with Mike, cheapest flight looks to be $2200++ Maybe Thailand or Fiji instead?

That sort of ticket, >20 hours, usually fits into the sort of places that I prefer to dive.... :thankyou:
The harder it is to get to these places simply help to decrease the diver impact on the reef, hence better diving! :thankyou:

True about the worthiness of dives for the length of the flights!.... However, I for one, could never afford the resorts there, totally luxury and tres 'spensive....

I've hear the liveaboard is the way to go in the Maldives. It has been highly recommended to me by various people and on my wish list. I would be interested in going. Always prefer the warmer water temps, unless there is something I can only see in the cooler water.

This is one of the reasons we are going to start planning early...people can save up money, get time off from work, use ff miles etc.

Thank you all for your help in the planning.

Have you tried Etihad Houston to Abu Dhabi (dirct) then Emirates Dubai to Male (direct). Abu Dhabi and Dubai is only 1.5 hours drive (3 hours all in) and easy taxi ride.

Livaboard is the best way to dive the Maldives I am told.

Thanks weescot, I will look at it. Probably be next weekend since I have to shovel snow for a couple hours today in order to take my mum out for her bday :cool1:

But the Abu Dhabi-Dubai thing sounds like a very cool stopover :wakawaka:

And I love liveaboards! :cool2:

Oh - Kamala - you are killing me - all the places I want to go... in the same year!
Galapagos, Red Sea, and Maldives! Any chance of moving one of these to late this year??? Maybe one of the ones on this side of the world (while I'm still over here)?
