You may wish to consider the Dive Assure as well. It is an ANNUAL policy and it HAS DIVE INSURANCE AS PART OF IT so you only need one policy. You can do 'one off' policies for Dive Assure as well but their forte is the combo dive and trip insurance in a convenient annual policy. Even covers 1 day diving trips that get blown out if it causes you loss.

Please note that this program is NOT available in all states, there are 5 states, including NY which does not offer this insurance to its residents.

Looks like a great deal for smaller trips..when I have to increase the max cost for a trip like next year's Truk trip, the price really escalates fast. I didn't try pricing it for a lower cost trip which I might do multiple times (like Cozy) and then buy a one time deal for Truk to see what it would work out to.

george

I was just thinking of that , as the truk trip will probably be my major dive trip of the year and what im looking at for cost right now is north of $6K (probably closer to 8K before its all said and done) between live-aboard, palau, and CO island hopper airfare, that doesn't include the airfare to get me in the region that im looking at how i want to do it as its on miles but would like to try a few foriegn carriers out as well (Cathy Pacific, JAL, etc). CSA single trip looking a little stiff, may need to check out diveassure for next year.

Our Galapagos trip was way North of 10k - we used DAN for trip insurance - couldn't get one of the Dive Assurance gigs in NY for some reason. Just make sure and read the policy carefully - :wakawaka: There are some snags I've seen - mostly with the medical insurance part though - thankfully we didn't have to use it - but better safe than sorry.

Another comment on Diveassure.. small print that I confirmed via phonecon. You are only covered if it is a full dive vacation in a dive resort/ liveaboard etc. Relevant if you do any dive vacations, but stay at a regular hotel with SO, friends etc etc and arrange diving with a local dive shop etc. They did not seem to count that as a dive vacation, even if you dive most of your time there. I will probably use them again, because I like the coverage for multiple dive resort trips, but may have to supplement it for vacations not in designated dive resorts.

Very good to know. I will try to make it a point to ask about this exception. While not applicable to many...it surely does impact a number of our divers.

How important is it to complete the "total coverage of the trip" to the fullest extent? I hope this makes sense, what I'm about to ask. If a trip, including taxes and other fees, costs over $1000, I've noticed that there is at least a $20 gap in the travel insurance price if you say that your trip is only $900. Is that savings for the cost of the trip insurance worth it? Or, is it critical that you include all costs? Is that a part of the contract and if you don't specify the whole price then you don't get any insurance?

I've always been "complete" when I buy travel insurance. I've always included the tax and other costs, because that is the total of the trip, which is what is being asked. ...was curious on what others do. I was surprised on how much the gap can have, especially on high priced trips.

Thanks,
Margaret

Good question, Margaret. I had to guess at the "total" of the Red Sea trip, since I had not purchased my flight to/from JFK yet and I have no idea how much I'll have to spend on food for the meals not provided. I believe that my policy (through CSA) covers UP TO that amount, based upon your real losses. I just guessed a round number.

So, I think that unless you have to blow off the entire trip (like Tammie aka Sea Seeker had to do for the Red Sea trip when she broke her leg a couple of weeks ago), you can gamble & lower your insurance max if you are comfortable doing so. If you're traveling in the Caribbean during hurricane season (June-Oct), or if you're one of those who seems to be perpetually "unlucky", then just spend the extra $20! :cool1:

I didn't think about the total to include meals too, but I agree with your comments....you gamble if you lower the total cost. For a trip completely ruined by illness or weather, that can make a difference. I guess that's why for big expensive trips, it's important to be complete. I know $20 isn't a big deal, but I also know that a lot of my friends don't think to buy travel insurance in the first place, so that $100 isn't spent on a policy, and it's used elsewhere.

I don't insure every trip, either. Big, expensive trips or trips during hurricane season are the ones I insure. Guess I have a little bit of the gambler in me! :birthday:

I am considering the annual Dive Assure plan, but so far I like the coverage through CSA policies better. I'm still doing research on the subject.
