Feb 2010 Update: The dates will be Aug 13-16th which is 4 days of diving. We will not be able to get 2 boats this time so only 6 lucky divers will get to do this amazing trip! This trip will be opened for booking soon. Thank you, -ww

Bruce sorry to hear that your circumstances will not allow you to make the Cooper River trip this year!. I hope when you get back from Truk/Palau ( insert jealous smilie here) you will have the time to post a trip report about it on SD.

Great we'll get you on the list!

This is night dive in the middle of the day. You should be comfortable with night dives and have a GOOD LIGHT as your light will be all your visibility that you will get. You will also be diving against the current but on your hands and knees...in other words making your way into the current looking for the teeth.

Since you are a newer diver I wanted you and EVERYONE to know what you are up for in this truly unique diving venue! kamala

p.s. Only 2 weekends a month have tides that will allow 4 (1) hour dives. The rest of the time the current it ripping so fast it just blows you along the bottom with little opportunity to find teeth. You need some current to blow away the silt but not so much you can't move INTO the current along the bottom with a diving pick / screwdriver.

IMPORTANT UPDATE:

As we put the finishing touches on this trip I need to advise everyone of a slight change. In the past the State of SC has required the boat to have a license for recovering artifacts. Starting this year every diver will need a license. The form is pretty simple to fill out. You need to send it the State of SC and allow 2-4 weeks for it to be processed. When they process it they will send you a license number. You will use this number to report any artifacts/fossils found. Again all straightforward. The prices are as follows:

Six-Month:
( )In-State Resident ($5.00)
( )Out of State Resident ($10.00)

Two-Year:
( ) In-State Resident ($18.00)
( ) Out-of State Resident ($36.00)

The process is basically as follows:

1. Complete the application, print out, sign and MAIL to the State of SC.
2. When you go on the trip you will record any artifacts or fossils you find. This allows the state to preserve the state's history and allows divers to provide valuable information to scientists they would not otherwise have. The recording can be in bulk for example 6 meg teeth of which 4 were fragments, 1 totally intact and 1 mostly intact. If you do not find anything you simply say "nothing found".
3. You will be requested to complete a report every time you dive the Cooper River all of which can be done online. If you are not diving you are requested to make a qtrly report saying "Nothing Found" or "No Dives" until your license expires.
4. If you provide your email on the application the State will send you a qtrly reminder so you won't forget.
5. If you wish to be a regular diver on the Cooper River you need to fill out these reports or you will not be able to get another license, but they are trying to make it easy enough to comply.

Basically this is similar to what REEF is doing when they do fish counts. Only in this case they are doing Fossil and Artifact counts.

Ok gang....now is a good time to get upgraded to premier member levels...they will be the first ones to book and will have a week prior to general membership.

I will post the directions later for how to do it if you are not sure.

Such are the wonderful powers of suggestion. I just signed up for the premier membership. As fossil collecting is one of my hobbies, I am certainly hoping to make the Cooper river list. Ed

IMPORTANT UPDATE:

This trip will fill out quickly. I have looked at how to get another date and we can do another 4 day run to include the weekend of Oct 1st and 2nd.

Here is the potential caveat of the late Sept and early Oct trip.

1. The river is shallow so will start cooling down contingent on if we have an Indian Summer or not. Therefore it is suggested that you dive dry if you do this weekend.
2. Air temps can be 60-80 depending on the fronts that may or may not blow thru.
3. Water temps will most likely be low to mid 70's BUT if we get an early fall vs and Indian Summer...the water could be as chilly as high 60's.

I'm sure we have some hardy divers who don't care about a few degrees one way or the other cuz they will be diving dry. Dry diving also means the air temps will not bother you as you won't be wet.
