You can get a version of Win7 with an XP partition so you can run XP software

I have Win7 Home Premium and love it!

YES

See here on the Win 7 version comparison page.

I know CS4 and LR2 will work, I just got the Win7 Pro upgrade disc for a friend who was using the trial version of Win 7 ultimate, no problem with using those programs on Win 7 Pro.

If it's not too expensive I shall buy it, assuming it will go onto this awful Vista computer I'm using. There are sorts of things I hate about Vista and I suspect several will carry through to "7", but my biggest beef is that I can't run much of my XP software and this will (apparently?) solve that. But how much is it?

Doesn't affect my decision to buy a Mac, mind.

Microsoft.com has a diagnostic tool you can run on your machine to see if Win7 will work or not

my current laptop had Vista originally, which I hated; I really like Win7 even though I didn't go for the upgraded version that has the XP partition

You should research your decision by using the microsoft.com site for win 7.

My friend upgraded his Vista X64 machine, and loves it. I am using a X64 Vaio build with win7 home, soon to be pro.

What exactly about Vista do you hate, except that you were unable to use your XP software????

I also like Win 7, although I avoided Vista, mostly because of 64-bit driver issues that weren't resolved until towards the end of Vista when Win 7 was on the horizon. I run it on all my PC systems (Did I mention I'm a computer geek? Multiple Win PCs, multiple Macs, and multiple linux boxes. :cool2: ) except the VMware virtual system on my MacBook Pro, which I have a copied purchased for, but haven't actually pull the trigger on yet.

The only software issue I ran into was a geeky port of a unix networking utility (winmtr) wasn't working, but then, I tend to keep my software up-to-date.
