The dead fish spines are still venomous. Some divers will cut off the spines with shears before bagging, others are just very careful. Heat can neutralize the venom, but it take more heat then is comfortable once it is in your system.

That's what I thought. So how come they don't injure the eels and groupers and others that eat them when dead?

At least I'm not a trip virgin for this one!

Add to another significant event, in addition to my b-day, I'm doing my 100th dive

LIONFISH UPDATE:

Hey gang...back in the office and here is what I have regarding updates for lionfish hunting.

1. From Capt Ken:
"Yes they will be able to collect lionfish, I only have 1 spear onboard. Just hope they dont get stung. Tell Kamala to do a lionfish killing seminar to keep people from getting stung."

2. I have found that the simple lionfish spears really work great AND they are lightweight, easy to use and effective. Once you have shot them its best to use a 2nd one to do a kill shot to the brain or a knife etc. Pole spears are heavier and do not shoot as cleanly as the lionfish tamers.

3. I can get a pkg price for kevlar gloves, shears and a collection bag + lionfish tamer if you are interested. We are doing it for the Roatan group this October.

4. Yes we can do a quick workshop on how to kill, cut off spines and safely collect the fish. If the fish is DEAD the sharks are not interested. If they are twitching then they hang out! The secret is to shoot them, then ensure you kill them with several pokes in the brain and then cut off spines. That way they are DEAD in the bag and not interesting. WOUNDED fish on the other hand are very interesting!

5. Alternately you can kill them and ensure they are dead and then as Tammy suggested feed them to the grouper or eels or drop them and lobsters will eat them etc.

How many people are interested in trying their kevlar gloved hand at a bit of spearing? How many just want to help *spot* them?

It'd be an honor!! :thankyou:

It'll be the first dive of the trip. I'm at 99 right now, and don't have any plans between now and then.

Unfortunately, I'm bent Posted Image and my doc has taken away my wings for at least a month and my gills for at least two months, so I'm not going to be able to go. Hopefully someone will be able to fill my spot.

My only dives now are in a chamberPosted Image: number five this afternoon for more bubble crushing.

BTW the symptoms were very vague and would have been very easy to blow off as overexertion.

Hope everyone has fun.

CWB
