IMO, there can be too much "stuff" that turns your config into a hardware store of confusion.
My gear for every dive (tec or rec) is:
-Bottom timer/depth gauge
-Compass
-Can light (delete for tropical blue water )
-2 backup lights (on shoulder straps)unaware that a team of divers is spare mask
-Wet notes
-Surgical shears that tuck in my wet notes
-Cutting device on front of belt. (small flat nosed serrated steak knife)
-Pre-rigged spool & SMB
-2 or 3 extra double enders
If I was on a boat dive in open ocean with heavy current, I'd swap SMB's and opt for the humongous DAN SMB (with whistle and reflector) over my standard Halcyon 3 footer. The OMS dye tube looks interesting as does the GPS that Kamala mentioned.
