HSA... the Handicapped Scuba Assocation and DiveHeart as well as many other organizations help divers with disabilities learn to dive and train able bodied divers to be dive buddies for disabled divers.
Several years ago SD.com sponsored an HSA training class for several able bodied divers to become dive buddies for disabled divers. We also sponsored the training of a disabled veteran as well as a dive trip for him. It was a huge success and we've often discussed doing it again.
Would anyone be interested in learning more and/or being an able bodied diver for a disabled diver? How do our current members feel about disabled divers joining our trips? And would anyone be interested in us sponsoring the certification of a wounded vet again?

I think it's an awesome idea. I certainly would love to have a disabled vet on an sd trip.
Each wreck has a tale to tell about its life and its demise.
If you are observant while diving in dark places listen to the account each has to tell, You cannot come away unaffected.

Are we also fine with non-vets with diving disabilities? The Vet comment was more of a 'sponsorship' thing.

I have a local dive shop that does an annual disabled diver trip that is popular both with disabled and non disabled divers.
I would think layout of the resort would be important. The resorts we use in Cozumel and Bonaire would work really well. Not sure about the Roatan resort with the hillside and all of the steps. I believe my local shop also does Curacao and Grand Cayman in their rotation.

Thank you George! I agree the resort and its staff are critical. Our post has caught the attention of a disabled diver who has been lurking in the shadows and would like to join our Bonaire trip... Divi is great for disabled divers and she has been there before so it seems like a slam dunk to me.
I'm glad the group is excited to learn more about HSA, DiveHeart and other organizations that help divers realize their full potential in the water without regard to the constraints that bind them on land. And we'll certainly look at doing more in this arena for 2014 and beyond!
Now for some ideas on fund raising and education and if people would be interested in learning to be able-bodied divers etc?

I agree that Divi would be a great resort for challenged divers. From a lot of first floor rooms to flat dock to level entry to the boats. The one boat has no stern so it's easy off easy on. Flat calm conditions. I can't come up with a single down side to Divi. Did I mention great diving too?

I'm kind of new to SD but love the ideas as I was trained with diveheart in 2011 and have been a buddy on 3 or 4 trips with them. Also I'm trying to plan at least 2 or 3 trips in 2016 I love Cozumel want to go back if any wants to go also open to other ideas .
