:teeth: The Night Before Christmas

Twas the night before Christmas,
he lived all alone,
in a one bedroom house made of plaster and stone.
I had come down the chimney with presents to give,
and to see just who in this home did live.
I looked all about, a strange sight did I see,
no tinsel, no presents, not even a tree.

No stocking by mantel, just boots filled with sand,
on the wall hung pictures of distant lands.
With medals and badges, awards of all kinds,
a sober thought came through my mind.
For this house was different, it was dark and dreary,
I found the home of a soldier, once I could see clearly.
The soldier lay sleeping, silent, alone,
curled up on the floor in this one bedroom home.
The face was so gentle, the room in such disorder,
not how I pictured a United States soldier.

Was this the hero of whom I'd just read?
Curled up on a poncho, the floor for a bed?
I realized the families that I saw this night,
owed their lives to these soldiers who were willing to fight.
Soon round the world, the children would play,
and grownups would celebrate a bright Christmas day.
They all enjoyed freedom each month of the year,
because of the soldiers, like this one here.
I couldn't help wonder how many lay alone,
on a cold Christmas Eve in a land far from home.
The very thought brought a tear to my eye,
I dropped to my knees and started to cry.
The soldier awakened and I heard a rough voice,
"Santa don't cry, this life is my choice;
I fight for freedom, I don't ask for more,
My life is my God, my country and my corps."
The soldier rolled over and drifted off to sleep,
I couldn't control it, I continued to weep.
I kept watch for hours, so silent and still,
and we both shivered from the cold's night chill.
I didn't want to leave on that cold, dark night,
this guardian of honor so willing to fight.
Then the soldier rolled over, with a voice soft and pure,
whispered, "Carry on Santa, it's Christmas Day, all is secure."

One look at my watch, and I knew he was right,
Merry Christmas my friend, and to all a good night.

It is really nice to hear things like that while we are out of the states. This year makes three in a row that I have missed the holidays with my family.

I am sure that everyone has heard of the attack on the Consulit in Saudi, we just got word that we move out in four hours to secure the site, or whats left of it. Gotta love being in a volenteer Anti-terror unit! I will let Yall know how it goes when I get back to Belgium.

Dejah: This poem was so appropriate and beautiful.

Vinny & Chris: My prayers are with you and your families. I have one family member and two other friends there. We just said goodbye to Jereel last Friday.

It is really a difficult part of life but are praying protection for each of you and that you return safely.

Know we are watching the news closely and covering your every step with prayer.

Thank you for keeping the USA safe. :teeth:
Merry Christmas,
Sylvia.

PS/If you need anything, please let me know, I can get packages to you but for your protection do not post any addresses on open websites.

We just got back to Belgium from Jeddah a few hours ago. It was worse than what the news had reported. The pictures of smoke rising over the mission was from the Marine house (where the Marine guards live) being burnd to the ground. The explosions looked to hand granades tossed at local security forces at the main gate. My fellow Marines are credited with saving the lives of ALL the americans. The chancery building was never penitrated, even though it took small arms fire. The Marines got all american personel into the safe haven, locked the door, and formed a cordon around the outside.

The attakers that got on to the compound where using the Marines house to fire on the chancery, during the fire fight the house caught fire and burned to the ground, the marines lost everything. I have some pictures if i can figure out how to post them.
