I'm an avid member of all sorts of different forums. I was a forum host at one time as well. During that time, I was informed that about 70% of the members there (creativecow.net if you must know) were what we call lurkers. They get the info they need and never ask questions or give feedback. It's a shame, but a reality. Most people just aren't very "vocal" in many of the forums I participate in.

I was feeling bad until I read this:

Approximately 50% of our members have never posted.

I don't post much because I am at work. I do have a computer at home, but it is extrememly slow. I could buy a new one, but I would rather buy dive gear.

I will make it a New Year's resolution to post more.

... or if I think I can offer something of value to the topic.

Damn, I didn't know that we were supposed to add value with our posts. I just add volume. Looks like I am going to have to quit posting. Bye, bye.

...assuming the low posting participation rate is a serious question, I'll take a stab at posing a few observations:

1) one cannot explore the board without registering as a member, so naturally all the tire-kickers who just want to see what's behind the door register as members, inflating the membership rolls...only then do they diiscover SD.com isn't for them.

SD.com is 'based' in Dallas, TX, I suspect most 'members' are geographically distant from 'headquarters', so active participation becmes relatively pointless...I know if I didn't live in Dallas I wouldn't be interested in SD.com.........I'm looking for a lifetime dive buddy, so a purely cyber-relationship wouldn't interest me, I need to be where I can meet would-be buddies in person.....parties/ happy hours/ etc. Even if, for example, I went on a SD.com trip, and met, say, a nice 'mermaid' from NYC, it would still be very unproductive.....the odds are small either one of us would give up their home to 'join' the other, whereas if I met a local lady on a trip and sparks flew, there'd be a reasonable chance the relationship could grow back at 'home'.

2) not every single diver is an extrovert

3) not every single diver feels themselves especially 'witty' ,and perhaps feel a bit overwhelmed/overmatched with the board 'banter'......not everyone can be Robin Williams, moreover, not everybody with a good sense of humor can come across that way from behind a typewriter.

4) sometimes it doesn't take long for a thread to 'max out'...ie, the obvious has already been stated by the quick-on-the-trigger 'extrovert' board members, leaving little more original thought to be added.

5) late-comers to the board may feel to be 'outsiders'...sometimes it's hard to butt-into threads where the 'regulars' are exchanging inside jokes without feeling like a fool, and risking the reaction "who the heck is this guy?"

...on a more cherry note, with this posting I've doubled my post 'count'! :teeth:

Hey Karl!!! Welcome to the Board! I hope your posting trend continues and you become one of the 'regulars'!

By the way, most of us don't get some of the inside jokes, so don't let that stop you. :teeth:

Hello Terri,

:teeth: for the warm welcome! ...perhaps I might post more often if WW could see to it that I'd get to use them as credit towards my PADI "CyberDiver' cert ! :diver:

...I'm not 'against' the inside jokes...it will just take time to work my way to the point where I feel at home enough to begin to 'wade-in-that-pool'.

...I still need to flesh-out my personal profile and dig up an appropriate photo...I'm new to digital photography (although I've been diving for 3 years) but I think I can scrape up a dive related photo from my Bahamas JULIET live-aboard trip.....I know it helps to be able to associate a face with a name.

Karl
