NYDiver...you are soooooooooooo cool!!!

I got orders for 3 so far...maybe 2 more if Alikat wants an indestructibe coating on hers and now I only need orders for a total of 40-50 in order to pay all the custom work and upfront costs.

5 down...(maybe) and 35-40 more to go!

Yes, I want 2 if they'll fit.

Cool...that puts us at 7 orders...43 more to go! And actually I need one for my original (and still brand new 10 year old PINK :birthday: tank)...at least the purple will tone some of the pink down. So that leaves us with needing orders for 42 more! -ww

Anodized aluminum is nice, painted is border line, bare aluminum is a bomb with time.

I have never seen an anodized scuba tank for sale. I'm sure there are some one-of's out there though.
Painted Al traps saltwater under the paint.(if you dive in the ocean) and that saltwater promotes corosion under the paint. It happens on every tank I have seen in guam. The time it takes varies and usually the corosion is minor.
Bare Al oxidizes and forms a protective layer. I sell more tanks without paint than with for this reason. If you want to see how well this layer protects the Al get ahold of some mercury paste and put it on some Al(not a tank!) it will be dust in about a week.

Cheers Jim

You got the idea, once the paint is chipped or worn it exposes raw aluminum, which then begins to turn to aluminum oxide. Salt water then aids in eating further and further under the paint into the nice soft virgin aluminum until you have a nice large rigid aluminum oxide patch that eventually could explode or it will lie in wait until a nice whack on the cancer spot and BLAM the tank splits.

The tanks that you deal in if they look like they are raw are not, they have been flashed anodized with an aluminum powder to try and retain a shiny look, a raw aluminum tank would be pretty pitted and nasty within days of its first exposure to the salt water. Other anodized tanks look like colored aluminum, I've seen red and blue before, but colors are endless, limited only by your imagination, dyes, and what your dealer stocks.

Hey all, on the talk about salt water eating away at tanks and paint after time to help prevent this problem wouldn't you want to rinse your tanks with clear unsalted water after a salt water dive as you would with the rest of your gear? I think that would definitely slow down any processes mention...

Does the paint still chip with doing that? I don't own a tank as of yet, but plan on getting one this year..

The paint hasn't chipped as much, as it has scratches just from regular use.

I like number 2 because the fish stands out more, but it doesn't really matter to me. I'm too shy to display something like that on my tank :angel2: , but I would purchase one (possibly two) just to support the site.
