Is beer a health food drink because its made for the grains from the grain group from the 5 block health pyramid ???????

Actually, beer is healthy for you in moderation. The alcohol is good for the heart, there is some protein (a bottle of Bud Select has 0.7g) and silica which is helpful in making bones strong. Just as a couple glasses of red wine a day is healthy, so are a couple bottle of beers. Also, a study on rats with liver problems, the equivelent of 1-2 servings of alcohol actually decreased the time it took the liver to repair itself, 3 kept it neutral and 4+ servings increased the time it took to repair.

I'm sure Kamala will agree, most everything is okay to eat, as long as it's in moderation. The problem is when people have a breakfast, lunch and then go to a resturant and eat their entire dinner thinking it's 1 meal when in reality, the average meal served in a resturaunt is between 2-3 meals and usually cooked with a high-fat content method. Has anyone ever looked at the appetizer menu at a resturaunt such as TGI Fridays, the Outback, etc..? I usually find just 1 appetizer that is not deep fried.

If we just ate in moderation (portion size and the quantity of junk food) we would not have the problem today, but when a standard portion of meat is 4oz (a regular fliet mignon cut) and people constantly eat 12oz steaks as a normal steak serving and the only walking that is done is walking to-and-from the car, that does explain why so many people are obeese, not because the USDA calls french friend fresh food.

WDFBeer...you are right for the most part...however by allowing people to further be deceived into thinking that french fries have ANY semblance of nutritional value we are being grossly negligant.

The really sad part is that the average American eats only 2 servings of ANY type of fruits, veggies or berries and that if you subtracted french fries out of that equation the number of servings would drop to 1 serving a day.

The US RDA is 9 servings a day and that number will soon increase to 9-12 servings...btw...that is 9 servings of RAW fresh fruits, veggies and berries. :usflag:

Is there an alternative source or way to get a full dose of veggies and fruit each day? It's hard to eat healthy when you're traveling and dependent on what we now call "restaurants." I mean a supplement that actually lives up to the claims?

I frequently have a Guinness as my meal, sometimes a few meals in one day, ;-)

So here's some more of what beer's about:

89-90% water (by weight)
3.5-4% alcohol
0.2-0.45% protein
4-5% carbohydrate
0.40-0.45% carbon dioxide
0.02% mineral salts

Besides giving beer it's head, the carbon dioxide helps to create a cooling or refreshing effect during the summer. The hops bitters stimulate the appetite (which, in my case, may not be such a good thing).

The average beer is 5% ABV (Bud, Heineken, MGD) and Guinness is actually just 4% ABV. Ice Beer hangs around 5.5% ABV and I always thought that alcohol surpressed the receptors in the brain which gives the sensation of feeling full, hence why you eat after drinking? A recent study was just performed around the holidays on drinking at office parties using "tasteless" alcohol such as vodka in mixed drinks and showed that just 1 drink will effected your appitite.

I am pretty sure, I do know my beer :wakawaka:. Also, where is what is considered a standard single serving of alcohol

1.5 oz of 80 proof alcohol such as vodka (1.5oz x .4 = .6oz alcohol in serving)
12oz of beer (12oz x .05 = .6oz alcohol in serving)
5oz glass of wine (5oz x .12 = 6oz alcohol in serving)

It is also a common misnomer that American beer is not as strong as European beer and that Bud is 3.2%. That value comes from beer being measured in Alcohol by Weight (ABW) and not Alcohol by Volume (ABV) such as hard liquor and wine.

3.2% ABW is approximately 4% ABV and the alcohol content of Bus id 5.0% ABV, Heineken is 4.9% ABV and some popular German beers are 4.7% - 5.2% ABV.
Here is a link explaining some of this and See if you can find Michael Jackson's book on beer. 15 years ago while I was still in high school, the Discovery Channel put out a CD-ROM with a title of "Michael Jackson's World Beer Tour" or something close to that. I think I have long lost that CD, but I wish I could find it as it a lot of useful knowledge about beer.
