When I last lived in PA.....I was working at a tech school as a recruiter and had two incidences occur that just floored me.

One was where one day the big boss walks in my office. He closes the door and sits down and I can tell it isnt good. Apparently, his secretary....a lady my senior in age.....had filed a formal SEXUAL HARRASSMENT complaint against me for calling her MA'ME. He said he knew I was from the South and that is what we do and he had calmed her down but from now on.....call her MS. ******* and I did.

The second incident....was at the same school. Every morning I came in the school I would pass an office where there were 3 young ladies (age range 26) working and I would say.....Good morning ladies.

One of them came in my office one day, closed the door and sat down. AGAIN I knew this wasnt going to be good. She said she too knew I was from the South and was being polite in my book, but her and the others wished that I would no longer call them ladies. I thanked her for coming to me directly (she knew why) and after that I just came in and walked straight to my office and said hello to no one.

If being called a lady, darlin, sweetie....yada yada...bugs you. My advice would be to stay out of the South.

Wow! I'm coming into this thread late, but what a show I seemed to have missed. Seems like this kind of stuff always comes up while I'm away on a nice, relaxing vacation!

But, of course, I like to put my 2psi in where I can so......
1) Thank you for educating me on what a sock puppet is. I just don't understand why someone would want to do that ... it sounds a bit like split personalities to me.
2) I believe we should give room to people to be honest and say what's on their minds without completely flaming them. Seek to understand, not necessarily agree.
3) Email is indeed a difficult way to communicate - and without eye contact and body language, much can be lost in the message.
4) Feedback is a good tool for personal growth - and not all of it is feedback that feels good; however, I hope that the original poster had provided SOME degree of feedback through PM or some other method before the general post.
5) It takes all types of people to make the world the interesting place that it is.
6) I am totally supportive of banning this guy after reading a couple of the additional jabs, as well as some of the other comments in other posts. This site is very good about letting people vent when they do so appropriately, but when the venting is designed to create havoc.... out!

Walter....there's some part of me that believes that you probably didn't lose a lot of sleep over this... but if you did.... I hope the support that you've received through this set of posts has put your mind at ease.

This thread was bugging me last night, while I was at work. Between people trolling with sock puppets (Shari Lewis joke anyone?) and people leaving or threatening to leave SD something was "off" and I finally figured out what was bugging me. The answer is in the title of this thread "Problem with moderator". I know the person who started this thread is a troll who's had his hand inside more puppets than Jim Henson, even so, his problem was not with a "moderator" his problem was with Walter (don't call him Lter) his problem was not with anything Walter was doing in his capacity as a site administrator - even if everything he said about Walter was true (I don't think it is) SO WHAT!!!! As long as Walter is not using his position as an administrator or moderator to keep you from picking nits, or saying that his position is the official SD position SO WHAT!!! Your problem would be with Walter the poster, not "The Moderator" I had a few disagreements with Walter (there are still tickets left to watch us discuss "the evolution of human sexuality - why people are attracted to others" over a few drinks in Grenada - I can't wait) but I still look foreword to reading his posts, especially in a thread I'm interested in and involved in. I agree with him 98% of the time - the other 2% it's not SD, or an administrator that I disagree with but Walter.
Along the same lines - many of the grumblings I've been reading seem to be about specific things, or people on a trip - not about SD in general. If the problem is with SD or someone who was acting in the capacity of a SD administrator etc . . . Have you PM'ed the administrators about the problem, have you posted the specifics of the complaint under feedback and suggestions. If there is a problem so bad that it means you quitting the SD chat room - I hope the powers that be can fix it. I have read a few post that say they have complaints without mentioning what they are. I hope you have passed on those specific complaints to the administrators. IMHO SD is going through some growing pains and until it gets adjusted to it's new size and role, there are going to be some problems. With the great group of people here - I believe that challenges can be met.
I am glad that the administrators, moderators etc. . . actually participated in the site discussions, and dive on the dive trips. When they make mistakes, or just plane do something you don't like - are they doing it in their official capacity as SD administrators? If it's a mistake - point it out, If it's something you don't like - point it out. If they are not doing the post, dive, chat, whatever . . . as an administrator - remember they are only human. Except Water who is Billy Goat Gruff and Marvel who is Tinkerbell

Whew - got that off my chest - I'm going to go lie down. :birthday:

Hawk made some general points that I have also been feeling, so I thought I'd throw in my two "me too" cents. I too have noticed the grumblings from quite a few people (I won't name names, but suffice to say it's more than just the originator of this thread and the "Leaving SD" thread). For "the rest of us" who don't know what happened in Florida over Memorial Day weekend, or who don't read every single post on this board and therefore don't see every little quibble, it's not useful for you to just say something like "I don't like how they do things here, so I'm leaving." Either go quietly, or share the specifics about why you're leaving so the rest of us know what's going on, and the admins can maybe address some of the issues causing you to leave. At least one person has done so (q.v. Randy's reasoned, detailed post in "Leaving SD"), but many others are just complaining and not offering specifics. Stay or go, whatever you feel comfortable with, but if you stay, don't complain unless you can offer constructive complaints.

'nuff said.....

Good questions deserve good answers:

drdiver has recently started a thread addressing this - "Let's Make Our Suggestions Known" under the Feedback and Suggestions forum.

I'm very late to this party, but I've only just spotted the thread. I thought the original post was unnecessary and offensive, but now Walter has exposed one of this individual's "alter egos" I understand - I've crossed swords with him myself. Good humoured banter is fine, so long as doesn't become intrusive, but barbed personal comments are not needed. At least Walter wasn't called a "jerk" to his (cyber) face, which happened to me.

For what it's worth, I haven't met Walter, but I have been (properly) corrected by him more than once, and have had a post pulled by him. Despite that, I have a high opinion of his knowledge and willingness to put himself out to help others, and considerable respect for him. I also suspect he has a wicked sense of humour and is often "tongue-in-cheek". He is one of the people who makes this board what it is.

I keep seeing references to problems on a recent SD Florida trip, but have no idea what happened. Given that the genie is halfway out of the bottle and we all know he's there, can someone please succinctly and non-judgementally tell the tale? To save the rest of us guessing.

There's no connection between scuba1231 and the incident on a recent SD trip that you're refering to, assuming I'm understanding you correctly. There's a separate thread regarding it, I'm not sure as to the exact name - something about an incident on a recent Memorial Day trip - but I'm sure you can easily locate it.

Scuba1231 has nothing to do with the issues from the trip or the issues that I am considering in regard to my leaving the site.

So if and when I decide to leave. MY issues will be addressed with the management, and also listed in an open thread. Not in a he said she said free for all.

You may certainly ask me and I will tell you what I am thinking but I will not discuss it in anyway that will lead to it being a burn Kay at the stake post for the enjoyment of the shallow minded. Nor will I respond to anyone that is planning on dragging it through the mud for the amusement of the aforementioned.

I believe that this thread has been exhausted. The person who started the thread has been banned from the site & the thread has changed direction. There is another thread that discusses these other concerns that have intruded into this one. At this time, I am going to close this thread.
