Advanced Nitrox Completed!

At the urging of WW, I'm posting my latest achievement. While I was on vacation, I helped out Mel Frechette(BottomTime Charters) with his young students of a prep camp. They are from all over the world and their parents send them to Lake Champlain for the summer. 2 students were from Mexico and 1 from Ireland. They were just doing dives 1-4 for Open water cert. I was the dive flag keeper (and surface babysitter). For the help Mel gave me a good deal on the Advanced Nitrox class. With a stage bottle in tow, we dove at my Great Uncles dock-there's an old sunken dock there from where a ferry used to come in and out back in the early 20's, and then over by Valcour Island. I learned a lot!! Different kicks, more math then I care for and learned my SAC. I didn't care for diving with a stage bottle as it makes me lean to the left a lot and screws up my bounency. But I also found I could swing it in front of me and kind of hug it and it would sit centered and keep me more streamlined. Being that my Zeagle isn't the greatest BC to clip a stage to, it was very close to me all the time, but this also meant I could very easily see the valve and gauge. My SAC is off a bit I think because diving with the stage makes me use more air in my BC and the weight and drag of it too! But I did real good in the exam and I'm glad I completed it!! I also got a lot of informal rebreather training too! Something else to think about next.

As for the stage bottle, I've seen too many failures with pony's and I feel a stage would be better for me. It's right in front of me, I can seen it, I can touch it and if it's going to leak I will know it!! They are very easy to get on and off in the water and while swimming.
Also since I'm considering going to a rebreather, advanced nitrox is required and you must carry a stage with a rebreather (at least the way my instructor teaches it!)
And with the certification, I'm allowed to go a bit deeper then recreational depths. I don't know how deep exactly, I didn't ask, but I don't intend to try it! 120ft is good enough for me right now.

The best day I ever had was face to face with a man and a shark, and wondering who was gonna bite me first- Poison Pen

I don't know about TDI but I do know IANTD limits for Advanced Nitrox.
Max depth:
135 ft. with a stage of EAN50. A maximum to two ten minute shallow decompressions are allowed in the dive plan.
Like Heather, I strongly recommend the course for anyone (including females) that want to try out stage bottles and learn about how to more effectively do their gas switches for accelerated decompression.
I will likely be taking a rebreather course through the same instructor that Heather used. My books are bought and in the mail.

I can carry like 36% in the stage and switch to that when I reach the right depth for that mix, or I could even pout 50% in it and switch at 30ft.
With a 50% deco mix you can make the gas switch at 70 fsw and beging your deco there. At 20fsw you can use 100% O2 and gain the maximum benefit during deco.
Just curious, did they talk to you about using an 80% deco mix?

Hope not - that's beyond the Adv EANx course. But many congratulations on doing this course! It was the first course that really made me improve my diving, even though I was already a PADI instructor. I urge anyone wanting to improve their diving to consider this course. The name is misleading - it's about so much more than nitrox, advanced or otherwise.Just curious, did they talk to you about using an 80% deco mix?
