We may be OK for Cozumel. They are hoping to get electricity back within a week and the hotels are planning on opening back up by mid-November. There is no message on the delmaraquatics.net site as to boat damage though. You can check on updates to hotels by going to islandream.com and looking at Cozumel. He's listing hotels as he speaks to them.

Not sure how good our chances for Cozumel are; all the news I'm reading and hearing isn't good.

Check out THIS LINK for a dive operator's updates on what he is seeing in Cozy.

Here some pictures of the Piers in Cozumel. For those of you that are familar with them, it's hard to image how the entire pier could vanish...buildings and all.

Anything new on go/no-go yet for this outing?

I realize that December is a bit of a ways off, but everything so far indicates that we may have to figure out an alternate destination for a contigency plan.

:verysad: Here is an alternative.....Cano Island in Southern Costa Rica. Good visibility, warm waters no thermoclines (unlike the Northern part of Costa Rica), jungle tours etc. I'm headed there Christmas week.....would be great if some SD people were there.
You must endeavor to pursue!

Have you been able to contact from Casa del Mar?
I know the Cozumelenos want us to come so they can get money back into their economy. The first cruise ship is due to dock in Cozumel on Nov. 15th. I say, to avoid problems with changing airfare and trying to get accomodations elsewhere, and to help their economy, we keep our destination. If the hotel is a problem, we probably won't have a problem with finding another hotel. I here all the ones downtown are fine.

My understanding is Casa Del Mar didn't sustain any damage...I haven't been able to find out any info on the dive shop, yet

it's good to hear that cruise ships will be back soon!

I heard the walkway under the street to the beach caved in and their beach area was messed up.

Hey gang...finally got a minute on the computer to check in...competing against 24 other SDer's is tough!

We do have several alternatives in the works and I think we all want to stay the course if we can for a variety of reasons. By the time I get back from Fiji we'll try to make a go/no go decision. Thanks to all for the updates....ideas and support. What a great group of people! -ww

I found a link on scubaboard.com to photos of Casa del Mar after the hurricane. There are about 75 photos of the damage. It doesn't look promising for a New Year's Eve trip.
