Just a thought on the subject:

To be remembered after we are dead, is but
poor recompense for being treated with contempt
while we are living.

My mother has allways said she would like
"Here lies an empty shell

The nuts allready gone"

I doubt my sister will let that fly though when the time comes.

Myself I am not sure about the tombstone but I have allways wanted to be encapsulated in resin then welded in 1/4" Stainless then all that sealed in about 6" of lead which is cast in reinforce concreet to make a 6'x6'x10' block that will last so long that some future archeoligist will break it open and conclude all you guys looked like me.

Or burn me and mix me in with some resin to make marlin lures. Give the lures to all my friends so we can still go fishing together.

Cheers Jim

A couple of classic choices:

Tu fui, ego eris "I was you, you will be me" — i.e. "What you are, I was; what I am, you will be."; to remind the reader that death is unavoidable.

Sleep after toile, port after stormie seas,
Ease after warre, death after life, does greatly please.

No tombstone for me, thanks. I didn't reside in a cemetary while I was living so I can't imagine family and friends coming to "visit" me there once I am permanently OOA.

Eternal Reefs

Yeah, that's more like it...come diving and visit me on my own little part of an artificial reef! :)

But if I did have a tombstone, I think it would say something like: DiveCandy...Ain't life sweet!!

My last words, regardless of age, I hope are "Oh my Gawd!!" as I run to the register clutching a fabulous pair or Jimmy Choos at such an unbelievable price it causes an instantly fatal brain aneurysm.

Morbid, maybe, but at least I was sensible not to pass up a great sale. Would I die happy? Absolutely, nothing can make a girl's heart sing like designer shoes 1/2 price!!!!!!!

The tombstone (or headstone like we call it in my neck of the woods) should read "She lived, she loved, she had great shoes"

What a wonderful idea, Jim! :)

I think I may have told this story here somewhere before but because it fits the topic, I'll share it again...

Many years ago there was a multi-part documentary on PBS entitled, Death: The Trip of a Lifetime, or something to that effect. It looked at different ways different cultures dealt with death. (I was also doing a project in school at the time on Victorian mourning jewellery so it fit right in.) Anyway, one of the segments dealt with a man whose wife had died recently. Since they had both decided to go the cryonics route, her head was frozen. Her body was cremated and put into capsules. So everyday or so, the husband would imbibe a capsule of his wife's ashes. Ghoulish to some perhaps, but I found it most touching (and romantic). :lmao:

@!&% Turn on my air.... bleh... too late.

Seriously, I don't want to be buried in a cemetery either. Cremate me and spread my ashes out over a reef and let me become part of the coral for others to see and enjoy.

I would prefer to die quietly alone along some peaceful river or a distant mountain top somewhere and let the little critters dine on my empty shell, but if that doesn't happen, cremation for certain... then spread me wherever your wandering soul beckons you in life.

No tombstone of me either...

But I couldn't resist the following quotes from Monty Python...

Life's a piece of sh**,
When you look at it.
Life's a laugh and death's a joke. It's true.
You'll see it's all a show.
Keep 'em laughing as you go.
Just remember that the last laugh is on you.
And...

What have you got to lose?
You know, you come from nothing,
you're going back to nothing, what have you lost?
Nothing!
