A study published in the August issue of Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise suggests that activities such as cleaning the house, washing the car, and doing light yard work are as effective at lowering blood pressure as a trip to the gym, HealthDay reports. For the study, 28 patients ages 42 to 63 were asked to expend 150 calories working around the house during a 12-hour period while wearing devices that measured activity, intensity, and blood pressure. The researchers found that four hours of “lifestyle physical activity” accumulated over the course of the day significantly lowered blood pressure for an average of six to eight hours in people with hypertension and pre-hypertension. For individuals categorized as hypertensive—with a systolic blood pressure of 140 mmHg or above—the “routine housework” was linked to a 13mm Hg reduction in systolic blood pressure over an eight-hour time period (HealthDay/Yahoo! News, 9/11).
