I am the webmaster for our dive shop's website, so I don't ahve much time for personal pages elswhere, but we do maintain a dive shop myspace account as well, www.myspace.com/sevenseasscuba.

Myspace is basically an empty page that allows its users to all set up their own mini websites and communicate through them. Its all about being able to share stories, pictures, etc.

When you look at sites like divebuddy.com, they are basically myspace but specifically oriented towards a certain activity.

I haven't read all the thread so apologies if someone's already said this. But I don't see (relate to) MySpace either, or the more common UK alternative FaceBook. I did register with FaceBook but couldn't work out what to do with it, so just forgot about it. I know it's commonly used by people with smart phones as apparently it's easy to access on the go, but down here in Belize smart phones don't have a place. I have often read, as recently as yesterday, of identity theft using FaceBook, so given that I can't see a need for it and I don't understand it I'm happy to stay well clear. Somone I know through another forum was surprised to find that personal information he had put on FaceBook and thought was secure was published openly by someone - not maliciously, but just "because they could".

I don't know anything about using these social networking sites but there's no doubt they've become immensely popular (and some people are making a lot of money from them). Can any addict explain in simple terms WHY they use it and WHAT benefits they get? Just the gist - don't bog us down in technobabble. I just want to know whether I should force myself to start using one.

I'm not an addict, but do log in every few days and find it usefull. I registered on Facebook after I left Uni in order to keep in touch with the friends I made there, as we all moved back home to find jobs and were spread out all over the country. I've since found old friends from High School too, its nice to see at a glance what they are up to now. I also find it a quick and easy way to show my dive photos to friends as they are notified when new ones are added instead of having to check a website or me email out saying "I have uploaded new photos!".

You do have to be VERY carefull though. On Facebook the default option is that only people you add as a friend can view your info, so I only add people I know very well in real life and who know all the sensitive info anyway (name, email address, age etc).

I'm the network manager at a school and we have to be extremely careful for child protection reasons. We block all sites with a social networking element as it can be a huge can of worms. We did a rough survey a year or so ago and went onto Facebook and found the profiles of around 200 of our pupils, they had listed their phone number, addresses, school and all sorts of personal info and photos. All someone would need to do is view their profile and they can get a picture of them, their school and their address, then predict their route home and wait outside school. We've had CEOP (the child protection branch of the UK equivalent of the FBI) come in several times to give talks to the kids and parents.

Its a useful tool but like everything (especially online things) is open to abuse and carrys alot of risks that people need to be educated about. Its been a hot topic here in the UK for the last few years.
The sea does not belong to despots. On its surface iniquitous rights can still be exercised, men can fight there, devour each other there, and transport all terrestrial horrors there. But at thirty feet below its level their power ceases, their influence dies out, their might disappears.
