Smoking is the number one past time of most countries outside the US...especially in Asia. Many divers do dm and instructor programs outside the US and many are younger...so its not as surprising as it may seem.

Some cultures add local ingredients to the cigs and by smoking them with the locals the ex-pat Americans fit in more and are accepted better.

So being in a stressful business of saving people hell bent of killing themselves, or keeping people who should not be in the water sometimes safe (think Palau for example) combined with being surrounded by it...the powerful 'hit' they get when they use it almost instantly and the cultural ties...its not that surprising to see lots of DM's and instructors smoke.

It is sad knowing what it does to you but not surprising.

On the good note...even the dive industry is moving away from as much smoking as it used to have. THAT is great!
