For the folks that have been to Belize - what side trips do you recommend for someone that's never been there?

I've done a ruins trip that was great...I know of people who have done the cave tubing and they said that was really good too.

On The Tides website, they have this one Cave tubing w/ Xunantunich...Xunatunich is one of the sites I've been to and it was really interesting;

I'd probably do this one Altun Ha Ruins or this one Lamanai Ruins

I've done the cave tubing, zip line and the Lamanai Ruins in Belize. I loved all 3 side trips, but I'd definitely do the Lamanai Ruins again!! It takes all day, but they fed us breakfast & lunch & drinks, including beer all the way back to Ambergris Caye! We stopped at this little village to switch from boat to bus, and they are completely self-sustaining in this village. They have great wood carvings, bowls, etc. for sale to the tourists who pass through on their way to Lamanai. The rain forest around Lamanai feels primordial....the jungle birds calling, the monkeys dashing about overhead, the ferns that are twice my height.....and then you round a corner and see these moss-covered ruins. Wonderful!

The one trip in Belize people should consider is to Actun Tunichil Muknal, ATM. You walk along the bed of an underground river for maybe a couple of miles, pitch black except for your lamps, until you climb out of the river into a massive natural cavern used by the Mayans for sacrificial rituals. Even the skeletons of their victims are still lying on the ground where they were left. It's a whole day from San Pedro, starting with a 7am flight to Belize City and continuing on road, and catching the last flight of the day back to the island. The people who have done it (myself included) consider it the high point of their time here, however long they were here and whatever they did.

Thank you Peter! That was one that I did...and if I recall I think I can find the same tour operator to set it up for us. It was great but does take an entire day...a long day! But WOW! kamala
