Let's say I forward my email newsletter to my diving friends but not currently SD.com regular members. They like the idea of a monthly newsletter with all the active links to whats going on the SD.com site BUT don't want to become a site member. Next newsletter can you add a contact line for only the emails to be sent to them on the monthly or bi-monthly. If they like a trip then they can initiate a membership. JTOL.

I think I saw that you are using constant contact?
If so they have a bit of code that you can insert into your site to allow people to sign themselves up for your newsletter easily.
This page has the one that I dropped into my mom's website.

2) Once you opt-out there is no way for me to add your email address back into the system. So if you do decide to opt-out be absolutely sure you want to.
We need to find a way to fix that... That strikes me as something thats going to be a big PITA in the future.

I like the sound of this!!! I'm going to check it out. I still haven't figured out all of what Constant Contact can do but I did see that it had a similar feature for Facebook pages.

If you are a member of SD.com we are making the assumption you want the newsletter. If not then opt out. If you went to a trade show and signed up for more info or a trip then we assume you do not want the newsletter and we ask that you opt in.
The first newsletter had an OPT IN area in it, in case you send it to friends and they want to participate. If you do not want it...then you opt out. I was not aware that once you do that you can't get back in although you should be able to resubscribe but I guess not.

We will see if we can make it more visible... not sure I want it to take up valuable real estate at the top. Will save that for important blasts...studies show that the only 2 items people will read when the open something like this is the most upper right and the most upper left!

Maybe change "Join Our Mailing List" to "Click Here to Subscribe". Join our mailing list just didn't look very linkish at first glance.
