For what it is worth, I will not go through those either, and it has nothing to do with modesty. Well maybe a little.

The safety studies were done with gross doses of radiation and surveyed for overall cancers. They were bad safety studies for many reasons as most of the radiation is concentrated to the skin and the studies were not powered to survey specifically for skin cancers. They were also not long enough to detect cancer risk.

As a person who spends a lot of time in the sun, with a family history of skin cancer, and other reasons why my personal risk for skin cancer is higher, I'd sooner walk naked through the security check than through one of those scanners.

I was taken behind closed doors and fondled for 5 minutes when boarding a flight out of the UAE. They don't like non joiners there much. They confiscated my Arabian curry.

For the health data geeks amongst us. Scientific explanation of my above opinion and post. What the real issue is a theoretical risk and an absence of data.

Any other women have this experience?

Recently I have noticed that the male TSA agents are always picking me for the scanner while letting all the guys around me go by.

That's why I opt out. I'm not about to give those scumbags another nude picture of a reasonably attractive female body for their collection, virtual or not. (Especially when I worked so hard to achieve mine.)

At least the feel-up is over in a couple of minutes. Naked pictures are forever.

End the TSA!

Teresa

Come on your talking about the pervert cop wannabe's in blue w/ fake tin badges. TSA caters to the hiring of thugs, thieves and perverts, and the statistics prove it. Look at the them most of them are morbidly obese heart attack waiting to happen. The only reason they move quickly for is to steal a cupcake because they forgot to pack there lunch or so they can ogle some young thing in the irradiating nude-o-scope.

Google "gotta a cutie for you" + TSA and you will see I mean.

TSA claims the porn-o-vision doesn't save images, but considering all the lies TSA has told I don't believe them, and my background in computers & storage I call bull cookies on this lie from TSA. Especially since the RFP specs say otherwise; if they couldn't save images then why do they have hard drives and network cards.

Common sense dictates that if you have an image of someone carrying a concealed weapon or device that can harm people, that evidence would be saved and used in court.

Yes that's true but TSA claims they don't save the images. If a case came up where they did and used it as evidence. it would come back to haunt them as they would have been caught lying (routine occurance) and there would be hell to pay, in the media and congress. Along with open the door for child pornography (manufacturing, possession and so on) and other serious federal charges.

Then there's the whole violation of the 4th amendment, exceeding the boundaries of a administrative search, and no safe amount of radiation exposure and exposes the public to more harm then good. Not to mention proven to have a excessively high false positive rate, and the German government scrapped there use because of the failure rate.

Like most government departments in most countries, TSA lie when they choose to. They know they can't be punished for it so why not? Politicians do exactly the same, and just as routinely.

I don't want the radiation but as far as the modesty thing goes. Really? You see less in those images than you do looking at a person in real life wearing a bikini or for that matter a dive skin. Who cares if some underpaid TSA agent sees your junk in an image? I have better things to worry about. Aside from that I do not want to be exposed to anymore radiation than is absolutely necessary. And if they want to grope me? If they get a thrill out of it then I have made some poor schmuck happy for a few minutes. However I would guess that they don't like doing it anymore than the gropee likes recieving it. I mean lets face it, unless your Angelina Jolee or Brad Pitt, get over yourself... Lol!

TSA Bashing aside and other rhetoric this post has spewed....

I was not aware of the questionable nature of these scanners until I read this post. I also have only been scanned by one twice. However on my last fight I was tagged to go thru it and I opted for the pat down. Took only a few minutes longer which was not an issue as I always have lots of time at the airport but I did feel better about avoiding ANY unnecessary radiation no matter how small.

Thank you for educating me and I'm sure others. Kamala

They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety. - Benjamin Franklin. Im sorry the Anything For Security (AFS)crowd is why this country has so many problems...Our forefathers are spinning in there grave(s).

Thats a teflon coated slippery slope and where does it end? TSA has already been caught lying about strip searching grandmothers, as well a long list of crimes and abuses
http://www.travelund...e-master-lists/

Despite TSAs lies those scanners show alot of detail enough to clearly make out gender and which way you hang. Even one of there spokesholes said them scans were family friendly and ready for the cover of readers digest, but has yet to put his money were his mouth is.

These devices wouldn't not have found the crotch bomber and the EU has banned them recently, and researchers in Germany (videos are on youtube) have shown the scanners cant find weapons but can find shirt lapels and sweaty shirts. Furthermore these devices are unlicensed medical devices so how do you know how much radiation there emitting, how often are they checked, maintained and services? There is no known safe radiation exposure limits, TSA employees are banned from wearing dosimeters. That alone waves enough red flags.

TSA Delenda Est

Just wanted to try and confuse you with some facts:
"The x-ray dose produced by backscatter systems is extremely low (less than 0.10 microsievert (10 microrem))." (http://www.tsa.gov/a..._fact_sheet.pdf)

To put this in perspective, my Federal Total Effective Dose Equivalent (TEDE) Limit while working at a commercial nuclear power plant is 5 REM per year, which with a little mathematical trickery equates to 1 MILLION micro rem. You get a TON more radiation from the flight you are about to take, so my suggestion is STOP FLYING, IT'S KILLING YOU.

The Millimeter Wave AIT, which is the only one I've ever seen at the airports, uses non-ionizing radio frequency energy. The non-ionizing part is the key word, because its ionizing radiation that causes cell mutation. To put this in perspective, the energy used in one body scan is "thousands of times less than a cell phone transmission." (see citation above). You get a ton more energy around your head from your cell phone, so my suggestion is STOP TALKING ON YOUR CELL PHONE, IT'S KILLING YOU.

When presented with facts based on evidence and studies, statements using inflammatory and untrue "facts" do nothing to help people make an informed decision, whether its with TSA scanners or choosing the next president

If you don't like the rules at the airport, TAKE THE BUS. Or boat, or tricycle.

Hope this injects a little sanity into this discussion.

FYI I work at a commercial nuclear power plant, and none of my co-workers or I will go into those scanners.

But to me the radiation issue is minor compare to the <ahem>...other issue ...for which I have stated my objections multiple times already. (bites tongue) ;)
