So here's the deal...

After my OW debacle here in Vancouver, I've decided to refer my ocean dives elsewhere. I've considered California, Florida, and Hawaii.

Since I won't be able to travel anywhere tropical for a worthwhile amount of time until June, I have time to research accommodations, flights, etc. What I would like assistance with now is locating an excellent PADI instructor to do my check-out dives with. (As well as a refresher course first.)

Other locations suggested to me have been Bonaire and Cuba. (Yes, Cuba! I'm Canadian! :respect:)

In addition to a highly experienced and patient instructor, my only other real considerations are a locale that is relatively easy to get to (Tibet is out), diving conditions that are generally conducive to newbies, and warm water!

Does anyone have a PADI instructor they would love to recommend? Or know of someone who knows of someone?? I'm very flexible and open to suggestions.

If you prefer, please PM me. :P

:clapping:

Lance Hansen, Jack's Diving Locker - Kona, Hawaii! He is patient, diligent, and fun. He has dive experience all over the world and has instructed in the Pacific Northwest, the Bahamas, the Caymans and now Hawaii. I could, of course, be a litle biased though.... :teeth:

Caetllon, if you can wait a few months I'm working on my Rescue Diver. I'll knock out DM and Instructor in no time! Oops, wait a minute... I don't need the liability!

Seriously, I've already made my recommendations.

You're welcome to come on down to the balmy waters of Monterey. I've got a class doing classroom and pool next weekend and going to the ocean on the 8th and 9th. Come on down.

Ok, so our water is ~52-56 deg F, but we still love it!

Oops! I just noticed the part about "excellent". Should I start gathering references?

If that's too soon (I'll be at DEMA next week), we could schedule some other time and we could even put you in a dry suit for your certification dives.

Wow! This is post #499 for me. Five hundred here I come.

Come on over to Guam Water temp gets as cold as 82 in June. If I can't finish your course for free then I know the Most patient instructor in the world. June is a long way away for me and I do have a buisness to run. But I would promise great diveing and great instructors and probably the easiest conditions to learn in.

Of course Guam is easy to get to just not cheep to get to.

Cheers Jim

Thank you for all the suggestions!

WileEDiver, While I've been to beautiful Monterey before and it's easiest to get to from Vancouver, it's just too damn cold for me. :lmao:

Jim, I'll try contacting you for more info re: Guam. It sounds lovely but the airfare may be a deterrent as you suggested.

Trimix2dive, Mexico is certainly an option. Did you train with Martin?

Peter, I'll have a good look at your website. :birthday:

Other than Nicolle's suggestion, does anyone else have any info they'd like to share re: Hawaii? It's easy (and *affordable*) to get to from Vancouver, so I'm seriously considering it.

:birthday:

If you go to Oahu, I dove with Ocean Concepts on the west side of the island. I didn't do my certification dives with them, but these were my first OW dives since certification. They were very friendly and are a PADI shop.

The DM, Kim, was extremely nice and helpful...and made me feel very comfortable the 3 days we dove with them. She's also a PADI instructor, but I have no idea if she's still there.

I can vouch for ProTech Belize which Peter (PeterBJ7) has very friendly staff. Just came back 3 weeks ago where my friend Shelley went down with me to get her PADI certification and had no complaints and enjoyed her 1st experience diving. I went for some advanced IANTD certifications and I can say that Peter is very thorough, he'll make sure you know all the skills necessary for a new certification or a refresher.
