DIR divers are typically the Last ones to show up at Happy Hour.

Why?

They're the ones running the flat tire drills on I-95 during rush hour traffic.
Oh, and with an Out-of-Gas drill thrown in for surprise.
Which means doing the buddy driver siphon gas drill.

and don't be surprised if they pull an Out-of-Cash drill once they arrive.
They've blown their paycheck on spare lines, rigs, redundant reels, etc.

I don't think that I see any flames brewing here.. No one is bashing the DIR folks...

As a matter of fact most of us have said for they do ie: cave they are right on the money.

Some have stated they get a bit on the fanatical side at times, Not all of them.. gasp, I am even friends with some of them, and not one of them have told me that I am going to die they think it's rather funny! But they have a good sense of humor!

So lets not even think about flames because I don't even see anyone with a match...

What you HAVEN'T seen here are any DIR divers poking fun at the non (anti?) DIR crowd.

Just thought I'd point that out.

Thanks for the input....just curious why they choose the word "stroke" as the insult of choice.

Just guessing here, but I always thought that referred to the "Everyone not diving DIR will die very very soon i.e. have a stroke" idea.

A brief summary of DIR is that it focuses on gear choice and configuration for team diving in difficult conditions, where it is important to know exactly what gear is where on someone else even if you can't see. As such it's admirable. The controversy arises when people accustomed to DIR configuration, because that's the sort of diving they do a lot of the time, try to influence people diving singly (ie. buddy pairs, I'm not getting at solo diving) in easy conditions (most recreational diving) to follow the same discipline. It is also controversial because it makes some arbitrary gear choices and imposes those choices on adherents - very sensible in the team/difficult environment, seemingly petty in the easy environment. Most DIR divers are pretty experienced.

In a sense, DIR already is critical of other divers just by the name. And those extremists within DIR really can be a PITA. I have friends who dive DIR and respect their choices even though it means they cannot dive with me.

Like most philosophies and "life styles," there are some very good ideas contained within DIR. I prefer to adopt those that make sense to my specific type of diving, but will not adhere to the entire philosophy

Maybe they should change their name to a less polemic acronym like DIMY (Doing it My Way) or maybe DIMSUM (Doing It More Safe Underwater Minority). :birthday:

But, all joking aside, there are many paths to being a safe diver and I think they've made some contributions in that area, if for no other reason than making us look at how we do things in a new way. Like you, I respect their choices and let them go their own way.

FYI, I have never criticized anyone for DIR training or their choice in equipment or style. I have been called a "stroke" albeit on another board. I am quite proud of that by the way. There are some great concepts that have come from the DIR movement and most of them have to do with safety. We can all use more safety. However, the title of DIR is a bit condescending to other divers.

By the way, I use an Air 2 and love it. Keeps things simple and I like that. And I've been using it since 1988 and haven't died yet. Or so I've been told.
