Bill is off diving all weekend. I'm guessing he'll be back to his computer some time this evening.

Hey, Dive Girl... some of us are still diving hot and heavy! Annasea is absolutely correct (at least on where I was). Just got in from three great dives... three more Sat, three on Sunday and several Mon. Can't spend all my time in front of the computer!

Still no correct guesses although Annasea's was the closest! Am I supposed to give you all a time limit and then reveal the answer... or just let you keep guessing?

Well, oysters don't have no lips. No way, no how. You can call 'em something else, but they ain't lips. Cuttlefish has lips and the other cephalopods. So I'm waitin' for an answer for this creature with lips. :lmao: :) :P

Geez... I've given a number of clues, even to the right phylum. Perhaps I should say "lips."

I confess I'm stumped. The only thing else I can think of with lips are snails, but I don't know my snails well enough to know how to sex them. Maybe moon snails or flamingo tongues. Really good one, Dr. B.!!!

Looks like "lips" is misdirecting folks, so let me try to add a bit more. As I said, Annasea is the closest (even though she isn't a diver yet!). Perhaps it is because this species is found from British Columbia to Baja. The juveniles spend their time flapping around like their other relatives, but the adults are "set" in their ways. They may reach 10" in size and live more than 25 years. Another way to distinguish the sexes is that the ovaries are red and the testis white (but you'd have to pull them apart to tell.

Will accept that answer... I'm referring to the tasty rock scallop (Hinnites giganteus) which is a delicacy to many here. Saw a number of them today on my three dives. OK, GIS GAL your turn...

Thanks Dr.Bill
I was amazed to learn that a Giant Rock Scallop can live to be 50 years old. WOW

CREATURE FEATURE 28

(one hungry fellow and boy can he go deep)

This creature feeds at least once a day consuming up to 100 % of its bodies weight in anemones. In order to feed on the anemone it must first become immune to the stinging properties of the anemone. It does this by touching the anemone and quickly retreating. This activates the production of a coating the is resistant to the stings.

This creature can be found on the beach to waters over 2,000 feet deep.
Forgot to mention he is one cute little critter.

Hmmm... that's a tough one without knowing what anemones it feeds on. Some nudibranchs might fit that description. Or me... 100% of my body weight in a day although not in anemones!

Just another reason I need to dive the PNW, Dr. Bill. Thanks for that tantalizing question. One of the things I like about diving--always something NEW!!!
