What else can I tell you about this little critter ~ He has a large family with over 200 different species living in the PNW waters. While his cousins are all related you might not realize it by looking at a "family" photo
Keep those guesses coming.
DG ~ this is a fun game. I am glad you are so smart.

OK one more clue ~ If you saw his land bound namesake many of you would be reaching for the trap and cheese.

***An aside***The Ratfish is a beautiful creature but this guy is much smaller .
I googled this ratfish character to see what one looks like and came across THIS. What an absolutely bizarre creature! Now if this isn't worth drysuit training, then I don't know what is!

Once in a while, it is good to step back, take a breath, and remember to be humble. You'll never know it all - ScubaDadMiami. If you aren't afraid of dying, there is nothing you can't achieve - Lao-tzu. One dog barks at something, the rest bark at him - Chinese Proverb.

One of my favorite finds.
How was the weekend of doubles?
So jealous. Home with a head cold and I lost my voice.

CREATURE FEATURE 29
pumping you for info...
It looks like a removed heart right down to its shiny (*cough cough hint hint*) reddish/pinkish coloring and the regular pumping motion bringing food in one siphon and out another. Although resembling an extracted heart, these sea creatures actually belong to the "phylum of the largest brains".

spine chilling...
These sea creatures have very broad, depressed heads (head is as wide as the creature is long) and enormous mouths. They have long, sharp teeth and a modified spine called an "esca", that is quite mobile and can be angled forward so it can dangle in front of the fish's mouth and be wiggled like bait to lure its prey.
