Speaking up for the younger generation. I interpret "making out" to involve heavy kissing and petting but no sex. Another term that is in common use these days is "hooking up". I don't know what the diffence is though.

Jonathan

Hey Jonathan! Thanks for jumping in so to speak!! And here I thought 'hooking up' just meant you'd scored a date!! Maybe I need to stay tuned to this thread afterall!!

And yes in my book...making out means heavy kissing and petting....which by the way is quite fun underwater!!! It does require excellent bouyancy control...breath control...and well I'm sure you can figure out the rest!!! LOL!!! :welcome:

wow! now i know why we're having a buoyancy clinic @ athens!

"hooking up" can range from platonic "i hooked up with him at the game" to sexual "i hooked up with him last night!" ROWRR! i agree with andrew on his def of making out.

Looks like the meaning of making out hasn't changed since our day, Bill.

I would caution everyone, kissing underwater could lead to embolism. It's not a great idea. If you have buoyancy control down (while greatly distracted), joining the club would be safer than kissing (in terms of potential embolism, not in terms of disease transmission).
No single raindrop believes it is responsible for the flood.

but if you made sure not to ascend while breathlessly kissing, you should be ok, right?

hmmmm...makes me wonder, tho....if lung volume increases with ascent, what happens to, oh, i dunno, let's say...BLOOD volume in a finitely expanding column of tissue?
any of you menfolk out there have any experience in this matter??

oh, and jd...thanks for keeping us UP on the current lingo!

Gases will compress and expand with changes of pressure.

Liquids, fluids and solids will not.

Yeah I know: I've been branded a non-group person - doesn't play well with others. I am so upset. Posted Image Let me know if you want to have some fun, without the drama - I'm good for that.

I'm glad that MOST folks here took this as a serious question (which is the way I intended it). I just wanted to make sure my definition was reasonably commonplace.

Funny thing is when I arrived at the dive park today, my buddy (Karen) was there (as expected)... as was her student who asked this question on SB (not expected). They'll both be up for dinner and Belize footage after Karen does a night dive with a group of instructors. I did four already today so I'm not up for a night since vis has been bad and it's almost a night dive in the day!

Went back to film the kelpfish eggs. On our last dive Karen and I were surrounded by a small swarm of bat rays. I'd seen lots of evidence of their activity in the park- feeding excavations and a lot of sediment stirred up in the water, but that was the first I saw of them todat.

Hope a number of you are getting wet this weekend!

Dr. Bill

I wish I was getting wet but will have to wait a week when I do a week aboard the Turks & Caicos Aggressor. It will be tough working this week since I'm dying to blow some bubbles. :teeth:

I usually try to do my underwater kissing at depths >= 60 ft. That way the volume change isn't that great if your bouyancy control is a little off.

Trigger- you're really showing your hormones, dear! Must have been hibernating this winter.

sweetheart, there is never a time when the hormones AREN'T showing. people at work worry about me if i don't grab at least one butt during the day....

and, while none of you will believe this of me, I HAVE NEVER KISSED UNDERWATER so i was surprised about the embolism thing. makes perfect sense if one is holding one's breath while ACSENDING (that's just for you, badboy!)

Jonathan- Dive conditions have improed slightly. Vis approached 30 ft in some areas until the classes and the feeding bat rays stirred things up. Water temp seemed to have dropped... on my fourth dive I felt a bit cool and we didn't go below 75 ft. Surge was a problem at low tide although nothing like the mainland.

legit question (don't faint):

just outta curiosity, what do you dive in? you mentioned boiling in a drysuit in one post.
the only time i dove la jolla the temp was 50 and i was cold in a 7 ml/5mlhooded vest....

You are correct. OTOH, how many have buoyancy control mastered to that degree?

Keep in mind, one of you will likely have to remove your mask to make it work at all. How are your no mask skills?

The other thing you can do (other than deep kissing, like Bill) is exhale through your nose while kissing.

My point is this can be done safely, but you need to be a skilled diver and you need to give it thought. I don't want any of our people hurt.
